We're Glad You're Here!

The Overnight Surf Trip (June 11–12) was a super fun experience filled with growth, connection, and plenty of ocean time. This was the sixth course of this program year and served as the final trip before the capstone—our 8-day summer expedition. While surfing was the priority, we also took time to prepare for the upcoming expedition.

The first morning focused on reinforcing a strong, supportive group culture, with games and activities that highlighted our priorities. I am happy to report that this crew was ready to deliver top-tier Camp Vibes. They were helpful, attentive, kind, and fun!

Next, staff and Leaders-in-Training (LITs—teens who receive a stipend for their leadership role during courses) previewed the summer expedition plan, demonstrated packing skills, reviewed gear, and facilitated menu planning with students. After a few hours working in the beloved gear warehouse (“The Cave”), the group headed to the beach, where students learned ocean safety protocols, completed swim assessments, and built confidence in the water.

Later, the group set up camp at Carolina Beach State Park, practicing Leave No Trace principles and working together to establish a campsite. The evening included shared meal preparation, redlight/ greenlight (yes, they still play it!), cards, and a fireside summit.

Students began the next day by breaking camp and heading back to the beach. Highlights included a guided surf session with Ocean Cure, Jersey Mike’s subs, free surf time, Britt’s doughnuts, group games, and a communication workshop. Students showed resilience, courage, and enthusiasm throughout the experience. The day concluded with packing up and returning to NCOAE, where students helped clean and return gear. As always, we ended with a closing circle, where students, staff and LITs shared reflections and personal takeaways.

This crew of students has come a long way since orientation. It has been a pleasure to be part of their journey, and we are looking forward to celebrating with them at graduation in July!
